NPCI Open Sources Drunix to Strengthen Enterprise Blockchain Infrastructure

Drunix

Mumbai: National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced the open-source release of Drunix, an enterprise-grade blockchain platform designed to enable organisations to build and scale tokenization platforms, digital asset ecosystems, and multi-organisation networks.

The announcement marks a significant step in NPCI’s efforts to advance open-source innovation and strengthen Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for next-generation digital ecosystems.

Developed as a high-performance distributed ledger platform, Drunix is built as an enhanced fork of Hyperledger Fabric.

The platform is engineered to support enterprise and public infrastructure adoption, enabling blockchain deployment at scale while maintaining privacy, governance, and interoperability.

According to NPCI, Drunix remains compatible with existing Hyperledger Fabric ecosystems while introducing major architectural enhancements aimed at improving throughput, scalability, and operational efficiency.

Built on NPCI’s extensive research and experimentation in blockchain and tokenization technologies, Drunix reflects the organisation’s focus on creating reusable technology building blocks that can accelerate the adoption of distributed ledger technologies across multiple industries.

NPCI has consistently contributed to India’s digital infrastructure through open-source initiatives such as FiMi, Vigil-AI, and Falcon.

The launch of Drunix represents NPCI’s second major open-source contribution in the blockchain and tokenization domain, following Falcon, which was primarily focused on production-grade blockchain network management and orchestration.

While Falcon addressed blockchain network management, Drunix extends NPCI’s open-source vision by strengthening the core blockchain runtime and transaction processing layer.

Commenting on the initiative, Vishal Kanvaty, Chief Technology Officer, NPCI, said, “As digital ecosystems continue to evolve, our focus remains on enabling innovation through open-source collaboration and scalable, future-ready infrastructure.

Through Drunix, we aim to accelerate blockchain readiness by providing the ecosystem with foundational technologies that support experimentation, interoperability and real-world adoption. This initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening India’s digital infrastructure while contributing to the global advancement of open-source innovation.”

Through the open-source release of Drunix, NPCI said it aims to further strengthen its role in enabling innovation and developing efficient foundational technologies that support the continued evolution of India’s digital infrastructure.
